For those of you who regularly read my newsletters will know that when spirit want me to get a message out there they drop little hints or single words for me to a) remember when I wake up and b) to use as a title for my next missive.
The word this time was FUN, in fact it was repeated several times before I worked out what it was. They must hang their heads in frustration sometimes!
So FUN it is.
When was the last time that you had FUN and I mean real FUN?
The dictionary definition is: Pleasure, amusement, enjoyment or entertainment but I feel there is a difference between enjoyment and fun. You can enjoy, let’s say, a meal with friends but when does it become fun? You can have a fun time at the fair, so is fun more exciting and well, more fun, than the word enjoyable?
Perhaps the human race has become more serious over the last few decades or is it because as we mature (or get older) that having fun just turns to enjoyment? Children have fun getting covered in mud, kicking leaves, climbing trees, damming up a river etc but can adults experience the same amount of fun or do they just enjoy the experience?
So is fun purely connected to children with their innocent and carefree attitude or can grown-ups partake? A walk in the country is enjoyable or as in my case, riding my motorbike but is that pure unadulterated fun? Probably not so what then determines fun, is it an excess of enjoyment or many enjoyments piled on top of another?
I guess that many people would say that drinking alcohol is a major part of having fun, but is that because you are becoming more relaxed, your inhibitions start to disappear and you begin to unwind, to then do something that is unexpected and completely out of character.
So many questions!
I feel perhaps that there has to be childishness or an irresponsibility involved to make something fun, to be spontaneous. No planning, no forethought, no worries, to let the inner child come out and just GO FOR IT!
This is hopefully a newsletter that will make you think….or not! We all need to have fun, just think about the last time you real had fun….how long ago was it?
It is time perhaps to repeat the process as we move towards the New Year, can we make 2016 the year of fun?
